Doux Bee Honey is the playful call sign for our escapade in beekeeping. Louisiana has a rich French history and “doux” is “sweet” in the historical dialect. Like most who market honey, my father and I began as hobbyists.
Our interest was piqued by the awe-inspiring characteristics of bees and the current ecological issues with hive depletion. We manage bees in the watershed of the Honey Island Swamp, a stroke of serendipity for us. The 70,000-acre swamp was purposefully named for its wild bee population. A subtropical climate supports a long season of foraging for local bees on a plethora of wild, indigenous plants. From the land known for its hurricanes, alligators, spiders, snakes, and even a local swamp monster comes Doux Bee Honey.
